It is quite normal to expect people to want to look and feel good so this might explain why we think anti-ageing skin care products will help. Collagen makes up approximately 25 percent of the total protein in the skin. Collagen is related to other anti-ageing substances in the body called anti-oxidants.

One of the best known anti-oxidants is vitamin C and despite continual research, no-one body involved can decide just exactly how much our body should consume on a daily basis. Unfortunately all skin care treatments that use vitamin C have the problem of atmospheric oxidization to contend with once the product is exposed to the air.

To get around this some skin care treatments are based on derivatives of vitamin C, which are more stable and less expensive. However, these anti-ageing skin care treatments are not as effective vitamin C based products, although vitamin E and lipoic acid are also anti-oxidants and have similar effects.

Vitamin E has many functions including inhibiting the formation of cancer cells. Another, lipoic acid is in every cell of our body and is used to generate energy for us to live but also helps reduce and reverse the skin’s ageing process.

Phytochemicals form the other category of anti-ageing skin care products which are special chemicals that are extracted from plants with a variety of that are used in skin care today. Phytochemicals prevent occurrence of certain types of cancer.

Other vitamins from the B group, are also used in anti-ageing skin care like vitamins B5, B6 and B12 for example. This is a vast area that has the potential for many new anti-ageing skin care products and services in the future but research needs to continue.

There is no doubt that what has been learned so far is only a small part of the jigsaw puzzle but research is moving forward rapidly and it is only a matter of time before a new generation of products becomes available. In time it is hoped that less expensive and more reliable anti-ageing skin care products will become available for a larger number of people to use.

In some respects the real way ahead lies in our own hands as there are many things we can do to reduce the signs of ageing naturally. For instance, regular sleep patterns, exercise, a good healthy diet and less stress will all contribute to reducing the signs of ageing.
